Collagen for research and cell culture

Most collagen a research group can buy is sold as a catalogue item with a certificate that says very little. The lot arrives, the gel sets differently, and a protocol that worked last year needs rebuilding. Groups learn to over order and hoard a single lot, which is a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation and a poor way to run a laboratory.

What we supply

Research volumes are small, and plenty of suppliers treat them accordingly. Alpstein takes the opposite view. The material a group uses at the bench is the same material, from the same closed process and the same specification, that a manufacturer receives by the kilogram. The only thing that changes is the quantity.

Supply comes in the forms the bench needs. Soluble atelocollagen solution for coating plates, flasks and microcarriers, and for fibrillar gels formed in the incubator. Soluble atelocollagen powder for reconstitution at a concentration you choose. Fibrous atelocollagen powder, paste and sheet for 3D culture, freeze dried scaffolds and explant work. Sterile grades for cell work, non sterile where the protocol includes its own sterilisation.

The material ends up in 2D coatings for primary cell attachment, 3D matrices for spheroid and organoid culture, stem cell differentiation platforms, migration and invasion assays, tumour and fibrosis models, wound healing assays, contraction assays, microcarrier culture for expansion, and the early feasibility work that turns into a device or a therapy three years later.

What Alpstein brings to the bench

01

Consistency between lots, held to the same tolerances as clinical supply. A protocol written once stays valid, and comparisons across a study or between collaborating groups hold up.

02

Intact triple helix at approximately 300 kDa, atelopeptide, so fibril formation and gel stiffness follow published behaviour rather than surprising you.

03

Endotoxin below 0.5 EU per mL, non-collagen protein below 1 percent and total protein above 98 percent. Primary cells, immune cells and stem cells all respond to contamination before they respond to your treatment, and the cleanest background is the one that arrives clean.

04

Independent characterisation data from Intertek, Cambridge and Oxford goes into a methods section directly, which makes a paper easier to review and a result easier for another group to reproduce.

05

A path to scale that already exists. Work that starts on a bench and moves toward a device, a therapy or a partner keeps the same material, the same supplier and the same documentation, so nothing has to be re-validated at the point where a programme can least afford delay.

06

Direct contact with the people who make the material. Questions about lot behaviour, format or a protocol that will not settle are answered by the team who ran the batch.

Why Alpstein

Small quantities without a small quantity compromise in quality.

Research grade material at research volumes.

A protocol written once stays valid across a multi year study.

Lot to lot consistency held to clinical tolerances.

Fibril formation, gel stiffness and cell response behave as the literature predicts.

Intact triple helix, atelopeptide.

Primary, immune and stem cell work without an inflammatory artefact underneath the data.

Endotoxin below 0.5 EU/mL.

Coatings, gels and freeze dried scaffolds sourced from a single specification.

2D and 3D from one material.

Fits an aseptic protocol or one with its own sterilisation step.

Sterile and non-sterile options.

Drops into a methods section and supports reproducibility.

Independent characterisation data supplied.

The same material and documentation carry into device or therapy development.

A route from bench to clinic.

Answers come from the people who ran the batch.

Technical contact with the manufacturing team.

WOAH negligible risk sourcing and full traceability, ready when a project turns translational.

Documented provenance.

Reproducibility starts with the substrate.

Hoarding a single lot is a reasonable response to an unreasonable supply chain. We would rather fix the supply chain.
